Here at United Way of Forsyth County, our mission is to improve lives in our community by mobilizing the caring power and spirit of our citizens. We want to be a community where all people have the opportunity to engage, thrive and achieve a better quality of life.

We work to advance the common good by focusing on Education, Income, Health and Basic Needs. These are the building blocks for a good life: a quality Education that leads to a stable job, enough Income to support a family through retirement and good Health.

Promoting Self-Sufficiency/Strengthening Families & Seniors:
We understand the importance of promoting individual self-sufficiency, strengthening the family unit and supporting our aging population. We believe individuals and families should have access to the tools and assistance they need to grow strong, productive and independent. In 2011, 53 adults received GED scholarships through Literacy Forsyth so they could complete their degree, get a better paying job and be self-sufficient.

Substance Abuse/Mental Health/Domestic Violence:
United Way provides support to those who suffer from substance abuse, have mental health issues and are victims of domestic violence as well as their families. By supporting the Forsyth County Drug Court Program, United Way motivated 8 individuals to complete the program, increasing their chances of leading a productive and successful life.

Therapeutic Services for At-Risk Children & Youth:
The availability of therapeutic services is key for the development and healing of at-risk children and youth, who may have been removed from their families, exhibited improper behaviors or have been neglected or abused. CASA’s are volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in the court system. United Way supplied training for 26 CASAs in 2011, which has saved taxpayer dollars on appointed attorneys’ fees.

Promoting Community Health, Safety, Leadership, Information & Referral and Nonprofit Education:
United Way promotes access to tools needed to keep our community healthy, safe and informed. Through a collaborative between Forsyth County Schools, local dental practices and United Way, over 100 smiles were brightened through Give Kids A Smile Day in 2012. Students that otherwise would not receive dental services were given screenings, x-rays and cleanings, free of charge.

Strength-Based Support Services for Children & Youth:
The success of our community depends on the ability to provide our children and youth with educational, character and esteem building and support tools to enable them to reach their highest potential. Credit Recovery is a United Way initiative created to increase the percentage of Forsyth County high school students who graduate on time and decrease the percentage of those at-risk for dropping out of school.

Services for Citizens with Special Needs:
We all want to feel successful, independent and included. Those individuals with special needs are no different; they may just need a little more help along the way. In 2012, United Way of Forsyth County partnered with Siemens to provide limited transportation to and from work for 7 adults with developmental disabilities in Forsyth County. We’re helping adults with special needs get on the road to a brighter future.

With the support from people like you, we are impacting the lives of thousands throughout our community every day to make sure they are on the right track to a successful life.
