What is Furkids?
Furkids, headquartered in Atlanta, GA, is a 501c3 nonprofit charitable organization that operates the largest cage-free, no-kill shelter in the Southeast for rescued cats and Sadie’s Place, a no-kill shelter for dogs. Furkids also operates one of the only facilities in the Southeast dedicated to the care of FIV positive cats. The Furkids mission is to rescue homeless animals, provide them with the best medical care and nurturing environment while working to find them a forever home. Furkids heals the whole animal, physically and emotionally, restoring its health and its spirit.
Furkids has rescued and altered more than 20,000 animals since its founding in 2002. Approximately 1,000 animals are in the Furkids program today, in the Furkids shelters, 13 PetSmart and Petco adoption centers, and more than 400 foster homes in the Atlanta area.
Furkids is the only animal rescue organization in metro Atlanta that allows children of all ages to volunteer. Furkids volunteer programs are designed to restore the health and spirits of injured and homeless animals while providing healing opportunities for volunteers who are strengthened by the bond of love and care between humans and animals. For more information about Furkids and to get involved, please visit www.furkids.org. Furkids will serve over 4,000 cats and dogs in 2017!
Why is Furkids needed?
Each year, in Metro Atlanta alone, 90,000 dogs and cats are killed simply because they have no home. The Furkids mission is to help end pet overpopulation in Georgia through sterilization, high-quality adoption and by providing valuable spay/neuter services and pet care education to people in the community.
Where do Furkids animals come from?
Many of our animals are rescued from kill shelters on their last day, some come to us from owners who no longer can care for them, some are abandoned. All are homeless and in need of care like the animals pictured.
Where does Furkids get its money?
Furkids operates entirely on monetary and in-kind donations, modest adoption fees and through the services of a dedicated network of volunteers. We also operate a thrift store to benefit the shelter.
What makes Furkids unique?
1. We operate the largest no-kill animal shelter in Georgia. Our 10,000 square-foot cat facility features colorful, spacious rooms filled with cat trees, perches and toys. At any given time, the shelter is home to 300 frolicking kittens, teenagers, adults and seniors. We also operate a 5,000 square-foot shelter for our dogs and other animals live in foster homes or stay part-time at our 13 PetSmart and Petco locations.
2. Furkids is the only shelter that welcomes children as volunteers. We understand the special connection between kids and animals, and we invite children and groups to volunteer with us.
3. Furkids is one of the only shelters that accepts FIV-positive cats. Contrary to what many people think, FIV-positive cats aren’t under a death sentence. Read more about FIV-positive cats at www.furkids.org/fiv.
4. We have our own surgical suite located right in our shelter, staffed part-time by a licensed veterinarian and other veterinary staff.
