Volunteers for Literacy works to improve people's lives through these programs:
Read to Succeed is a an early literacy program that provides materials and training to teach young children to read and helps older children impove their reading skills and comprehension. Read to Succeed volunteers work with students in grades pre-k through elementary school. The Book Bank - a community partnership between VFL, the Habersham County School System and Community Bank and Trust - supports this program by redistributing donated books to children in our community.
The Dictionary Project is an annual program sponsored by VFL and community partners that supplies free dictionaries to students and adults in Habersham County. Dictionaries are distributed through schools (public and private), ESL classes and literacy workshops.
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are available to all non-native English speaking residents of Habersham County - adults and children - to help improve their English comprehension and communication skills. The ESL program also offers civics classes for those pursuing U.S. citizenship.
GED Scholarships are available to teen and adult residents of Habersham County who are pursuing their General Equivalency Diplomas. Scholarships cover the cost of GED testing.
