Environmental Community Action Inc. (ECO-Action) is a statewide, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to help Georgia communities organize to confront environmental health threats and to strengthen and facilitate community participation in preventing and resolving such threats. ECO-Action assists those who remain locked out of the traditional circles of power and influence. Though we serve the general population, we focus our assistance on the people and communities who are in need of it the most – people with limited formal education, those with few resources, women, children, people of color, and rural residents.

Since its inception in 1998, we have assisted more than 140 community-based groups in 95 of the 156 Georgia counties providing community organizing assistance, training, capacity building, and leadership development to members of vulnerable communities. Our most recent major accomplishments include:

Working with Atlanta neighborhoods (Adair Park, Mechanicsville, Summerhill, Pittsburgh, English Avenue and Vine City) to spearhead the Tire Initiative to Reduce and Eliminate Dumping (TIRED) campaign which increased public awareness of dumping in metro Atlanta and removed more than 3600 illegally dumped tires from Atlanta communities and stream banks.

Sustaining and strengthening our relationship with Georgia State University’s Institute of Public Health resulting in the development of a new program, Youth in Environmental Leadership and Learning (YELL). This program has trained more than 35 youth as environmental advocates/ ambassadors to promote environmental protection in Atlanta.

Supporting the establishment of the Proctor Creek Stewardship Council, a community based organization that is helping to restore and protect the impaired Proctor Creek, one of thirteen watersheds of the Urban Waters Federal Partnership. This Partnership aims to stimulate regional and local economies, create local jobs, improve quality of life, and protect Americans' health by revitalizing urban waterways in under-served communities across the country.

We rely on citizen contributions, nonprofit and university partnerships, and foundation grants for our support.

Thank you for helping us to transform a few individuals’ desire to “do something” for their communities into powerful collective action.

Together we will reduce environmental hazards and create a safe and healthy environment for all!
