BURNAWAY’s mission is to provide critical coverage and dialogue about the arts in and from Atlanta and the Southeast to champion and support the vibrant creative communities in our region. BURNAWAY promotes, develops and connects the arts in Atlanta and the Southeast to create a more thriving and recognized arts community.
We fulfill this mission through our online arts publication, critics-in-residency program, writing mentorship programs, and annual print publication.
What do we do?
Since BURNAWAY was launched in 2008, we have featured the work of more than 1,000 artists and worked with over 200 writers online, in our print publications, and public programs. We have worked with high school students, artists, and emerging writers from around Metro Atlanta. The online magazine is available, in its entirety, for free.
Becoming a supporter of BURNAWAY means directly contributing to:
· Coverage, discussion, and examination of the visual arts in and from our region. Our online publication produces over 420 articles a year, featuring artists, arts organizations and businesses from around the Southeast.
· Connecting Atlanta to a larger regional, national and global arts conversation through our publications, Critics-in-Residence, and Emerging Art Writers Mentorship Programs.
· Providing access to the arts for high school students through our High School Art Writing Program, which we produce in partnership with the Wren’s Nest and Hammonds House Museum.
How can you help?
By investing in BURNAWAY you help to ensure that the artists, spaces, and organizations in Atlanta and the South are receiving the attention they deserve and is needed to put these communities on the cultural map.
BURNAWAY’s annual fund goes directly to paying writers, increasing the amount, quality, and diversity of content we can provide, honorariums for the artists and critics who participate in our programs, and associated costs. We make it a priority to pay all of the artists and writers who work with us.
Each year, the cost of producing our programs and content grows along with our ambitions for increasing awareness of the visual arts in the Southeast. Every dollar you give has a tangible impact on our programs. This year, we'd love to make it to $5,000 as part of Georgia Gives Day!
We are currently completing a $10,000 challenge grant, every dollar donated or pledged through December 31 is doubled. That’s two for one! Even more incentive to consider making an investment in BURNAWAY today!
Don't take our word for why you should support...
"Burnaway continues to be a unique and critical voice in the Southeast and specifically within Atlanta's constantly emerging voice as an arts destination. Burnaway offers a fresh perspective while simultaneously filling a necessary void with regards to art criticism, arts information, and community resources for artists and arts institutions. As an Atlanta-based artist who has lived and worked in Atlanta both pre and post-Burnaway, I can honestly say that the organization's impact is simply profound."
-Atlanta-based artist Fahamu Pecou
"I have cheered watching BurnAway develop as a major brand in the southeast since over the past six years. BurnAway has illuminated the arts in Atlanta at a critical time, and proven that the southeast region is a force to be reckoned with. I feel the fact that BurnAway operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization only further demonstrates their selfless dedication to the creative community. It is our responsibility as beneficiaries of years of original, devoted online content to show our appreciation in supporting BurnAway during the annual fund."

"Burnaway is my everyday morning read. We are fortunate to have Burnaway to cover art in the South and beyond."
